The Basics
All the essential information about The Alt School.
What is NIOS?
NIOS — the National Institute of Open Schooling — is a government board under India’s Ministry of Education, established in 1989. It is the official open schooling framework that makes homeschooling legally recognised in India, and is fully equivalent to CBSE and ICSE.
Is NIOS a legitimate board? Will colleges and employers accept it?
Absolutely. NIOS certificates are accepted by all central and state universities in India, including Delhi University, JNU, and Mumbai University. NIOS students are eligible for competitive exams like UPSC, NEET, JEE, SSC, and Banking exams, as long as they meet the subject and percentage requirements. NIOS qualifications are also recognised by public and private sector organisations for employment purposes.
Is homeschooling legal in India?
Yes. NIOS is the government’s own framework for open and distance learning, which provides the legal pathway for homeschooling families to get officially recognised certification.
Eligibility & Admission
All the questions about eligibility and the admission process.
At what age can my child enrol under NIOS?
For the Secondary level (equivalent to Class 10), your child needs to be at least 14 years old. For Senior Secondary (Class 12), they should be 15 or older. For younger children (ages 2–13), ALT School runs its own experiential learning programmes, and NIOS becomes relevant as they approach Class 10.
When can we apply for NIOS?
NIOS conducts admissions in two blocks — Block 1 for April/May exams, and Block 2 for October/November exams — with separate admission windows for each. We guide all our families through the application process and timelines so nothing is missed.
What documents are needed for NIOS admission?
Typically: proof of age (birth certificate), address proof, passport-sized photos, and any previous academic records. ALT School helps you prepare and submit all required documentation.
Curriculum & Flexibility
All the questions about our curriculum and flexible learning approach.
How flexible is the NIOS curriculum?
Very. Each learner can choose up to seven subjects, and the curriculum covers science, commerce, arts, and vocational skills. Students can also take public examinations twice a year, or opt for on-demand tests at a specific centre.
Can my child appear for JEE or NEET with a NIOS certificate?
Yes — NIOS degrees are accepted for IIT-JEE and NEET. The Association of Indian Universities recognises them as equivalent to other boards. Your child simply needs to ensure they’ve taken the required subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Maths) at the Senior Secondary level.
What if my child was previously in a regular school?
NIOS also allows students to transfer up to two subjects from their previous board through a Transfer of Credit (TOC) process, so prior learning is not wasted.
How ALT School Works with NIOS
All the questions about ALT School’s learning model and how it works with NIOS.
What is ALT School’s role — are you a NIOS study centre?
ALT School provides the day-to-day learning experience — the child-led, project-based, experiential education that makes learning meaningful. We work alongside the NIOS framework to ensure your child is academically prepared for their board exams while also developing the broader skills that exams don’t measure.
Do I need to be involved in my child’s education if they’re at ALT School?
You don’t need to be a teacher. Our facilitators handle the learning. What we do ask is that parents stay engaged as partners — attending check-ins, understanding your child’s progress, and reinforcing the culture of curiosity at home.
Can I work a full-time job and still have my child at ALT School?
That’s exactly who we’re designed for. Our flexible scheduling means your child has structured, supervised learning hours at the centre — so your career and their education are not in conflict.
